Mindful Parenting with Consciousness

Three years ago, Denise and I did a workshop on Mindful Parenting. We spoke to our participants (mostly clients from INDIGOBaby) about breastfeeding, co-sleeping, working from home and all natural remedies for the kids.

Do you remember this poster?

We just wanted to share the insights, knowledge and skills we learned through the art of parenting. We knew deep inside our hearts that the call to parenting was very challenging and it molded us into different beings! Because of our children, we have made major changes in the way we live our lives. In fact, INDIGObaby was born because of our very own sons. Without them, we would've never made the shift to a more natural, authentic way to living life -from the products we use, to the food we eat, to the schools we've chosen (*Waldorf Education) and activities we choose to do day to day. All that has changed and change is good because then you can gauge that you have grown :)

Now that I have been introduced to Kabbalah, I'm so honored to invite you to Michal Berg's upcoming lecture on Spirituality for Parents. Spirituality (Yoga & Kabbalah) and the toughest but most fulfilling job on the earth - Parenting, helps me become the best version of myself. To merge the two together in a lecture topic is so very interesting as most of us can benefit from this..whether you are a parent or not, you ARE someone's child!

I lifted the event details below from the Kabbalah Philippines website. Feel free to repost and share on your facebook walls, twitter feeds, etc. See you all there!

Spirituality for Parents by Michal Berg

As parents, teachers and guardians, we simply want what's best for the children in our lives. We want them to be happy, to achieve success, to love and be loved. But in today's rapidly changing world, this is proving to be a more daunting challenge.

Michal Berg is the President and CEO of Spirituality for Kids (www.sfk.org) and a mother of five. She is deeply committed to bringing spiritual programs to parents and children everywhere. Her vision is to provide even very young children with universal spiritual tools to help them discover their potential.

Michal lectures on the topic of spirituality for parents, connecting with mothers and fathers who are passionate about developing a mindful foundation for raising their children. She shares her insights, her experiences, and what she has learned from communicating with parents around the world.

It is Michal’s deepest belief that not only do parents assist in the spiritual development of their kids, but that children play a significant role in a parent’s spiritual growth.

Join Michal for her first speaking engagement in the Philippines as she discusses how to parent our children with a loving consciousness that contributes to their spiritual growth as well as our own.

Even in the city, we FLOW.

Last August 4, was FLOW IN THE CITY at Beyond Yoga studio in Tomas Morato. It was a full day FLOW affair organized by the women behind Flow:SurfYogaSamba Weekend Retreats- Denise Gonzales-Bernardo, Monica Eleazar-Manzano and Noelle Hilario. “We wanted to bring the FLOW experience to people who are unable to leave work or family for out of town retreats which we offer 2-3 times a year”, Noelle says. “This is also a chance for regular retreat participants to get together for a reunion party”, adds in Monica.

The activities for the day included Neuro-Linguistic Program (NLP) talk by PJ Lanot, Antigravity Yoga by Monica Eleazar-Manzano, Zumba by Sharon Yu, Inner Dance by Pi Villaraza and a Green Smoothie workshop by Imee Contreras of Sunshine Daydream.

For the NLP workshop headed by PJ Lanot, the participants did communicative exercises with the use of personality and modality mirroring.  These are essential tools in dealing with others at work and at home.

Everyone was so excited to learn the art of flight from the Antigravity Yoga class by Monica Eleazar-Manzano.

They all learned how to get into inversions like Back-belt Spider Man and Booty Wrap Monkey while enjoying the anatomical, therapeutic & hormonal benefits of being upside-down!

“We absolutely love heart thumping activities so we invited Zumba certified dance guru, Sharon Yu, to conduct a Zumba Party class”, Denise says. It was one-full hour of non-stop Zumba fun- which included lots of dancing, sweat and calories burned! MIO Watch Philippines representative, Ferdinand Aguila joined the class and measured the calories burned with his watch and awarded one lucky participant after the class!

Participants had unlimited supply of Lightwater and Vitamin Boost to replenish lost vitamins and minerals from all the dancing and sweating.

Pi Villaraza of Bahay Kalipay, Palawan facilitated the Inner Dance process, which brings the concept of FLOW into spiritual form. In this healing modality, we embrace the fact that we are essentially all energy, all vibration. Transformation takes place when we ‘flow’ from one’s birth purpose, Villaraza states.

Imee Contreras and Toni Bernardo of Sunshine Daydream Live Foods gave a short demo on the benefits of the raw food diet and how to integrate this into our everyday fast-paced lives. Simply by adding some green leafy vegetables to a fruit smoothie, we are taking in lots of live enzymes that can do wonders for our health!

All participants were given Goody bags filled with Goody ouchless accessories and other goodies by sponsors; Browhaus gift certificates, Mio Watch gift certificates, Lightwater and Vitaminboost bottles to keep us hydrated all through out the day, Moringana capsules and tea packs for an immunity boost.

Those who registered and came early were also given a set of gift certificates, earrings and rings from ENVY, gift certificates from STRIP and Nail Rituals organic foot and hand spa gift certificates which was given out by PBA-star Renren Ritualo, himself.

After a long day of workshops and activities, we had a fabulous feast sponsored by Kashmir Indian Restaurant and Dimsum & Dumplings. All the ingredients used for the vegetarian siomai and siopao are 80-90% organic plus fresh herbs and seasonal vegetables are used in food preparation as well. Kashmir Restaurant, Manila's oldest fine dining Indian restaurant, brought some good-ol Indian pica-picas: vegetarian samosas, pakoras and potato tikkis.

ANC’s Green Living TV crew with host Paolo Abrera were also present the whole day to cover the event.

Pipino: Watercolor Crafternoon

Last Saturday I was finally able to to attend Alessa's Watercolor Crafternoon workshop at Pipino, a quaint vegetarian restaurant in Teachers Village, Quezon City. It's not everyday that you get a mix of good food and art so this one was a special treat for me :)

Oh-so-cute cupcakes, muffins and cakes on display ready for munching

For those of you who haven't been to this gem of a place, you are definitely missing out. The interiors are lovely and the vegetarian/vegan food selection is delicious, guilt & cruel-free, and easy on the wallet, too! Think about getting a whole lotta good karmic points when you dine there. I've been there on several occasions, usually with my co-yoga teachers and FLOW partners because they're mostly vegetarians so this place is a life-saver because we don't have to worry the menu.

Here's a shot of the FLOW girls during our FOOD Magazine photo shoot in Pipino

Alessa teacher-mode explaining different techniques of Watercoloring

So I had no expectations from the class and was so impressed at how informative Alessa's talk was, complete with powerpoint presentation. This was a serious art workshop! For materials, some watercolor sets were on sale, she gave out some paper and lent brushes and colors to people like me :P She explained the basics of Water Coloring and we had plenty of time to practice.

Good to see Audrey of Googoo & Gaga

My son Santi knows how to smile for the camera :)

Kai proudly shows off someone else's activity sheet :P

There's always room for dessert: Pipino's coconut ice cream is made with love!

Some participants showing our work for the day

I've known Alessa since we were in High School (or even younger?) because she is the cousin of my good friend and business partner, Noelle. After the workshop, I drilled her with some q's to find out more about Pipino.

***

Monica: What is the story behind Pipino?

Alessa: It was in 2004 when I studied in New York after college (to take up continuing education classes in graphic design at Parsons and NYU) when I got exposed to amazing vegetarian & vegan cuisine there. That was when my dream of owning my own vegetarian resto was born.

My family's always been in the restaurant industry, but growing up, I didn't imagine myself doing what my dad was doing. Lucky for me, my parents allowed me to pursue the arts, but I guess being an entrepreneur runs in the blood and it was part of my destiny as well.

In 2008. I started dating my then boyfriend (now husband) PJ and he had just opened Pino in Maginhawa (together with Chef Edward Bugia and Star Jose). I shared with him my dream of opening a vegetarian resto. In 2010, when Pino moved to Malingap street, we decided to launch Pipino as a 6-item vegetarian line alongside Pino's menu. People were coming for just the vegetarian dishes, and after 6 months, we opened Pipino restaurant on the 2nd floor. (october 2010)

Monica: I know you had vegan/raw training in the USA, what certification do you have in the kitchen?

Alessa: Last September-October 2011, I took up some classes at the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York. I'm not a chef, but I like experimenting in the kitchen!:)

Monica: Are all the recipes in Pipino by you? I know you have a partner who is a chef. I'm sure he isn't vegetarian :P

Alessa: I work with Chef Edward Bugia on the dishes. He's not a vegetarian, but he's really, really creative. There are some items on the menu which I created myself, such as the pasta dishes, including the vegan lasagna, and all our desserts, baked goods and ice cream :). A lot of it was born out of trial& error and success in the kitchen ;)

Monica: Aside from doing Watercolor and Calligraphy, what other crafts do you do?

Alessa: I used to teach art through a mobile art school that I put together after graduating from high school. It was called Art Adventures. I've always loved art as a kid, I did textile paint, mixed media, calligraphy, oil pastel drawings, paper quilling, and other crafts as early as 5 years old. Right now, though a lot of my work is focused on watercolor and calligraphy, I also find the time to do stamping & printing, silver clay jewelry, and most recently, book binding. :)

Monica: What made you decide to do Crafternoon Workshops in Pipino?

Alessa: The main restaurant Pino supports local fine art and photography, so I decided that Pipino focus on Crafts. I started the Crafternoons because I dream of having a regular craft club that can meet and make different projects each time. It's a gathering of like-minded people, and is also a great way to share the love and appreciation for delicious vegan food.

Monica: Since Pipino, Pino and Burgr Project has achieved its successes in the span of how many years? Anything else you are working for?

Alessa: We're opening a Brgr Project branch, our first franchise, in Taft this August. In September, we're opening Burger Proj, Pino and Pipino in Jupiter st, Makati! Pino is turning 4 (August 8, 2008), and both Pipino and Brgr Project are turning 2 this year.

***

Congratulations on your expansion, Alessa! I'm so happy about this. There is definitely a demand for healthier food choices in Manila, by the looks of it! And what a wonderful marriage you have of conscious food and a haven for crafts work. I look forward to more craft series in Pipino!

Raw Truffles: Choco Chili Bliss Balls

I recently purchased a food processor on sale from the nearest grocery store. They went on a half-off sale so I said, might as well invest so I can create my own concoctions rather than buying sweet treats from the stores.

It might just be the best kitchen purchase so far because now I can easily blend ingredients for raw desserts without the hassle of scraping every last bit of morsel form the bottom of my blender!

Here is my recipe for Raw Truffles which I named Choco Chili Bliss Balls hugely inspired by Theo & Philo's Labuyo Dark Chocolate with Chili :)

Ingredients:

  • Walnuts
  • Dates
  • Cacao Powder (preferably raw & organic)
  • Chili Powder
  • Sea Salt
  • Coconut Milk (optional)
  • Virgin Coconut Oil (optional)

Procedure: Raw Vegan recipe books will ask you to soak the walnuts and dates to remove enzyme inhibitors but I must admit that I got excited and didn't get to at all. I found recipes online that didn't specify so I just tossed walnuts and dates in the food processor together with the cacao powder and used the S-blade until coarse. Then I slowly pulsed with sea salt, chili powder and chose to add coconut milk. Be careful with the coconut milk as this can turn your mixture from grainy to fudge. Scoop from food processor with a spoon and use clean hands/fingers to ball them and soak with vco before freezing. It should be ready in a few hours for sharing. Eat within a few days. Best paired with organic wine after dinner ;)

This is such a fun activity to do with your children. Santi helped me for awhile until he decided that 3 balls was his limit because he realized his hands got a bit muddy :P

Kabbalah & 2012: Reading The Stars

This is a late post on some of my notes from the talk Kabbalah & 2012: Reading the Stars by Sarah Weston last May 14, 2012.

Since I started my studies in Kabbalah, more of my friends are interested in what this is all about. Interesting to know that Kabbalah comes from the Hebrew verb Le Kabel which means 'to receive'. So let me share this knowledge with you so you are able to receive the light :)

  • Kabbalah is a spiritual wisdom meant to be shared especially now in 2012 when the merging of the worlds happen. This year is the year of COLLAPSE and CHANGE.
  • 1st Kabbalistic book is 4,000 years old written by Abraham
  • Kabbalah contains universal wisdom, it deciphers the code of the universe
  • It gives us a manual of existing life systems because if everything in nature has DNA. We live in a very organized universe. There are no accidents in life
Think about how much control do you really have over your life? The level of your consciousness plus your thoughts, plugs in to the metaphyscial plane to create your reality. This is the law of cause & effect, of karma.

  • Kabbalah is everything beyond the 5 senses. 99percent of our reality is the spiritual plane while the 1percent world of illusion is that which we see, sense, taste, hear, smell..this is the physical plane, merely just scratching the surface. The call of Kabbalah is to go DEEP.
  • TREE OF LIFE: There are 10 dimensions which exists in the world.
  • Kabbalistic Astrology gives us an insight into what's happening and how it affects us...
  • Mid August there is a highly militaristic combination of energy until October 7. The Universe is at a brink, ultimate controversy and everything can CHANGE.
  • If change doesn't take place, cosmic influences will begin to happen. 'If I don't choose UNITY, the Universe will do it anyway for us to choose to live in a different state of consciousness.
If you found my notes above interesting, please come to the next Kabbalah talk on August by Marcus Weston. Marcus will be speaking about the real roots of success and failure in business. In today's unpredictable environment, having the right business consciousness is key.

Prior to becoming a full time Kabbalah instructor, Marcus enjoyed a career in international finance
with Goldman Sachs and Citibank. He coaches students all over the world and has spoken at the United Nations and managed to secure the Kabbalah Centre's NGO UN consultative status.

Living Kabbalah System Level 1

Since I attended Gahl Sasson's lectures during last year's Asia Yoga Conference in Hong Kong, I've been so curious about Kabbalah. I seem to resonate with its teachings. I've followed Kabbalists on twitter for everyday reminders on how to deal with life. Recently, Ria Trillo invited me to a talk conducted by Kabbalah Philippines which prompted me to enroll in the Living Kabbalah System Level 1.

"What is Kabbalah anyway?", you might ask.

The official Kabbalah website states this definition:

The word Kabbalah means many different things to many different people. In a nutshell, it is an ancient wisdom that reveals how the universe and life work. On a literal level, the word Kabbalah means “receiving.” It’s the study of how to receive fulfillment in our lives.

If you are interested to join the course, here's more information:

This 8 week course will be lead by Senior Kabbalah Instructor from London, Sarah Weston who will teach you how to integrate the wisdom of Kabbalah into your daily life. It guides you step-by-step to overcome personal challenges that stand in the way between you and the fulfillment you deserve.

Whether you've been studying for ten weeks, ten months, ten years, this course will take you beyond the basics and give you actionable ways to change yourself, thereby change the world around you.

Registration includes the Living Kabbalah system - this kit includes 24 CDs with instruction, a light-work book and other tools to use in your process of transformation. You may also choose to purchase the downloadable version

Class starts on June 6, 2012 and will be meeting every Wednesdays at the ADB Building, Ortigas, Pasig City.

For more details or to register, call Cathy 0917-5281294 or email philippines@kabbalah.com.

The Hunt Begins: Kolisko Waldorf School

Earlier today, we attended an open house orientation at the Kolisko Waldorf School. YummyMummy Denise and I have started to hunt for a new Waldorf school for our kids, Benny & Santi, because they will be turning 5 in a few months, which means they have to 'graduate' from the Waldorf Daycare program of St. Michael Playhouse (formerly known as Mikael). Oh, we're going to miss you all Tita Winnie, Tita Marcy, Tita Malou and Tito Allan! :_(

Tiny Santi & Benny back in 2010 at St. Michael's Playhouse
We've always resonated with the Waldorf philosophy on education since we attended a talk conducted by one of the founders of Manila Waldorf School, Tita Bella Tan, back in 2009. I've said this before and I'll say it again...If you are a parent, you MUST listen to her speak about saving your kids' childhood (lives, really!) through age-appropriate education, and your life will be changed forever! Another inspiration I found online was through the blog of Panjee Tapales, a huge eye-opener! I truly felt a spark lit in me. Everything just made so much sense. I thank my path to Yoga because now I am able to merge my yogic values with that of my sons education.

Snack time at a Waldorf school assures you they serve homemade, healthy meals
In a nutshell, what I like most about the school is that they see a child as not only a physical & mental entity but also respect a child's SOUL. This is obviously lacking in other schools. Take a look at the toys of other schools. Mostly made from plastic in China, I bet. I recall asking our much-loved pediatrician, Dr. Crickette Palanca-Chen, why wooden toys are better. She answered that handmade toys are warmer to touch and have better intentions rather than factory mass-made plastic toys that are cold to touch. Now that I am into energy-work, I understand this concept very much. It's the same reason why home-cooked food meals made with love by your Lola or Mom have the power to heal...because of the intention they have poured into the food.

One of the speakers at Kolisko today mentioned that the attitude of the teacher in his Waldorf school made all the difference in his early education. Always remember that the children imbibe the feelings/emotions of their nurturers. This is why parents should always keep calm around their children. If parents are away at work, please be mindful of who you leave your children with. Your yayas or teachers are considered second parents. In Waldorf schools, they call teachers nurturers because that IS what they are, afterall!

Also consider the food the canteen sells or what other parents serve in the children's lunchboxes. When Santi used to attend non-Waldorf schools, I would cringe every snack time seeing all his other classmates eating packed junk. If you are a mindful/conscious parent, like I strive to be, you would understand where I am coming from.

Here are other reasons on Why Waldorf Works (via http://www.whywaldorfworks.org/)

Waldorf Education

  • Is based on a profound understanding of human development
  • Provides a detailed, richly artistic curriculum that responds to and enhances the child's developmental phases, from early childhood through high school
  • Cultivates social and emotional intelligence
  • Connects children to nature
  • Ignites passion for lifelong learning
  • Is the fastest growing educational movement in the world

About Waldorf Graduates

According to a recent study of Waldorf graduates:

  • 94% attended college or university
  • 47% chose humanities or arts as a major
  • 42% chose sciences or math as a major
  • 89% are highly satisfied in choice of occupation
  • 91% are active in lifelong education
  • 92% placed a high value on critical thinking
  • 90% highly values tolerance of other viewpoints

More on Waldorf Methods here.

This is WHY we moved to Palawan before.

When we moved to Palawan 2 years ago, I felt that the lush environment was perfect for a Waldorf school. I know it wasn't just coincidence that Walter and Grace Zozobrado-Hahn (of the Manila Waldorf School) also moved to Puerto Princesa the same time my family did. We did some early education initiatives, trainings and was successful in a start-up Waldorf-inspired school for the children of Puerto Princesa which we named Karawatan which means playground in the local dialect of Palawan.

Now that we are back in Manila. I have to make a crucial decision before school starts in June. I know that the people (teachers & classmates) he spends time with & experiences in these developmental stages of my son will help shape his future. My top choices are Kolisko Waldorf School and Acacia Waldorf School. Here are a few photos from the Kolisko Waldorf School taken today.

A child's growth & consciousness development (ages not seen on the left side!)

Bahay Kubo where kids can play
All-natural surroundings are soothing to the eyes. None of the bright, harsh & stimulating colors you find in other schools.

Things to Consider

My Pros:
  • Close proximity to Beyond Yoga (where I teach yoga classes).
  • More affordable tuition fees compared to what I pay in St. Michael and in Acacia Waldorf School.
  • Kai, the son of my good friend, also goes to school there. Other classmates of Santi in St. Michael will be moving to Kolisko next school year. It's good to know Santi already has friends he can bond with.
My Cons
  • Limited space to roam & run for the children.
  • No grass in the playground.
  • Since they are expanding, the might need to look for a bigger venue in the future.

Raw Food Potluck

A few months ago, a yogi friend of mine Dexter Tan realized it was time to create a private facebook group called Raw Food Support Group Philippines. This became a portal for raw foodists like Daniw of Bahay Kalipay and her sister-in-law, Asha of Dahon Kusina to share recipes and raw food information to people like me.
Raw Fairy and Raw Goddess in their element
I am not 100% raw, nor am I vegan or vegetarian but I do love my fruits and veggies and would love to finally shift to a greener diet. I have been incorporating a lot of live foods into my diet ever since I was introduced to it by conducting Yoga & Raw Food Retreats in Bahay Kalipay.

Last night was that private group's very first Raw Food Potluck Meet at the Dancing Queen studio in Makati Cinema Square. The venue is owned by the aunt of our well-loved Asha Peri, the caterer of our FLOW GOES RAW retreat.

As you can see, Asha also happens to be a dancer. I bet she was an Indonesian-dancing-princess in her past-life as she has this strong affinity with everything Bali!

The FLOW girls had to represent! Denise, Noelle and I are crazy about the Raw Food Revolution! That is why we had FLOW GOES RAW last August--so that we can introduce this amazing journey into live foods to the public.

Here are some of my top picks from the delicious meals lovingly prepared by other members..

These Raw Love Boats made my night
Deng & Toni made this creative DIY pizza
Dexter's Salsa Masterpiece
Asha's Asian Rolls
As Green As Can Be Pechay Logs
Veggie crudités with not tuna pate by Dr. Day Tormo
All Raw Choco Cups
Choco Tahini Balls to the Rescue
To cap of the night, there was drumming and dancing led by Escola de Samba de Manila's Toni Bernardo and Denise teaching the gals some dance moves.

Thank you to all the members of this Rawkin' group for always inspiring me to always "see the entire universe supporting my existing in a single plate".
