YIN YOGA for Stress and Insomnia

Many relatives and friends complain to me that they suffer from stress from work or insomnia. These problems are definitely induced by lifestyle factors, or plainly put, the decisions you make for yourself in your diet, work habits, etc.

With that being said, it's TIME to do something about it! Join me and Anna Carbonell at Beyond Yoga QC this Saturday as we lead you into a specialized Yin Yoga session for Insomniacs and over stressed peeps! This is a free event so please spread the word and see you all there!

Dear Monica,

I am too shy to approach you in class but I would just like to say that you are such a gifted yoga teacher. I appreciate that you inject an element of spirituality in your classes, that you take your time to explain the micro-movements required by each pose, that you come to class prepared, and that each class you teach centers on a certain theme. Your yin yoga classes have been helping me sleep, as I continue my practice at home to help with my insomnia. Thank you so much and more power to you.

I have 2 questions to ask if that is okay :) 1. In your yin yoga class, you tell us to sink into the pose and let gravity take over. Does this approach apply to vinyasa and other yang forms of yoga as well? and 2. In yin, you tell us to round our backs during some of the seated poses. How is this different in vinyasa, when we do fold-forwards and extend from the spine? Are the objectives of these poses different?

Thank you! More power. I hope you continue teaching! :) Namaste :)

Thanks for your comment eggtartsnomnom! My heart just grew bigger reading it :)

To answer your q's:

Yin yoga is a very different approach compared to yang styles. so in yin, i ask students to round the back to come into a yin form while in yang, i ask students to extend and lengthen. Same as with gravity, which yin works closely with versus in yang styles we kinda lengthen away from our roots , towards the sun. does that make sense to you? :)

I see! Mixed up the two styles there for a moment. I think it's because there are things we do in both practices (such as sending the breath to the tight spots) so I forget how different the two styles are. Thanks and see you in class! :)
