A Samba-Zumba Baby Shower Party!

My yummymummy soul sister and super Sambista, Denise is 8 months pregnant. What do awesome friends do at this time - throw her a SURPRISE baby shower!

Artist extraordinaire, Noelle Hilario gave the idea of using Samba/Brazil colors for the theme of the party. I suggested that we do a Zumba party so that everyone can have fun while working a sweat (always a good thing!) with everyone.

So the fabulous plan was to invite Dee to a (fake) prenatal yoga class at Beyond Yoga. I even got another preggy mum to help me make her believe there really was a free trail session by a new foreign teacher that we are trying out (Thanks for playing along, Pam!)! Dee was so excited about the hoax, that I didn't have to worry until we were ALL running late. I had to let her know to come 30 minutes later than scheduled because the "fake prenatal yoga teacher" isn't ready yet.

This was the chaos minutes before Denise arrived! Crafternoon at Beyond Yoga studio!

I asked guests to bring their own vegetarian snack for the party. Noelle brought the Green Tea cake and cupcakes from Pipino, I brought my own green olive tapenade and cheese, Clarisse brought her own white bean dip and crackers, Devaki brought puto and Joyce brought donuts- this came in late so it isn't in the photo. (did you know Dunkin Donuts in Powerplant Mall does not use eggs...so it's actually vegetarian but not vegan since they use milk)

Yes, it was a success! Denise was genuinely surprised and fell for our plan :)

The Brazilian Ouch

I am no fan of pain. However, the thought of some medical stranger shaving me down there prior to delivering my baby in a few weeks pushed me to do my first official brazilian wax. (My previous one was only partial)

I did expect the sensation of pain but I did not know the magnitude that a famous brazilian would bring. Believe me, it was pure T-O-R-T-U-R-E! It must've been because my skin is extra sensitive now that I am pregnant ( in my last trimester) ?!

Well...there goes my first..and last brazilian EVER.

In Due Time

For weeks, I have been complaining about the agony of the looooooong wait of my child's birth. Each time someone asks "How's your pregnancy?", I quickly reply "I can't wait anymore! I want to give birth today...NOW!" The transition from having a regular job to being a stay-at-home-mom adds to the stress of waiting because now, boredom hits me more often. Many times in a day, I would say to myself, "If only my baby were out already...I can play with him, breastfeed him, give him a bath..."

Thank God for this beautiful and wise piece sent to my mail from my good friend and fellow yummy-mummy-to-be, Denise.

Exploring Our Readiness
In-Between Times
It could be argued that life is more about the time spent waiting for something to happen than it is about something happening. What this means is that the big events in our lives are preceded by many days and nights of dreaming, planning, organizing, and waiting. The times of waiting in between the big events actually constitute the majority of our lives. These in-between times are anything but uneventful. In fact, they are rich with possibility and filled with opportunities for reflection and preparation. Like a pregnant woman awaiting the birth of her child, we have a finite period of time in which to prepare internally and externally for the upcoming event that will define a new chapter in our lives.

When we find ourselves in an in-between time, we often can't help but feel impatient for the impending event. We just want to get to the future and have the new baby, the new job, or the new house. And yet, there is a reason a pregnancy takes nine months to fulfill itself. Nature provides the expectant parents with this time so that they can prepare the nest. This preparation plays out on many levels. Materially, a space must be created in the home and resources must be set aside for the baby's future; psychologically, a shift must occur in which the psyches of both parents agree to be responsible for a new life in the world; and emotionally, the heart must open wider to embrace and fulfill a new love.

Whenever you find yourself in such a time of waiting, you might want spend time exploring your material, psychological, and emotional readiness. For example, if you are preparing to move to a new city, you could make a list of things you'd like to do in the city you will be leaving behind, and go to your favorite places and spend time with old friends. This way, you will remain fully engaged in the present as you await your future, savoring the in-between time as a vital experience in itself.

The underlying message here reminds me of the same ideals in the book entitled THE POWER OF NOW. May I learn to be patient and live each day truly in the present. My mantra for today is from Ecclesiastes:
"To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under the sun."
My baby will come...in due time ;)
